Health and Safety Intern

Cornell University is looking for a Health and Safety Intern to work at our main campus in Ithaca, NY for

the Spring and Summer semesters in 2024.

With general oversight and direction from the Associate Director of Occupational Health and Safety this position will work within a multi-disciplinary group of environmental health and safety professionals and gain practical experience in the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive health and safety program. The position will have duties designed to supplement his/her/their educational goals by being exposed to all aspects of the University’s Occupational Health and Safety Program including of safety engineering, contractor management, industrial hygiene and DOT/hazardous materials compliance. The primary function of this position is to:

  • Provide coordination and supportive duties for the development, implementation, and maintenance of occupational health and safety programs, procedures, and training.  
  • Provide industrial hygiene/safety services, and technical support to the Occupational Health and Safety team.
  • Provide assistance in transitioning into a SharePoint environment

Specific work tasks include: • Assisting in the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health programs, procedures, training and supporting documentation. • Developing, reviewing, or updating standard operating procedures. • Taking part in incident and indoor air quality investigations. • Coordinating and performing industrial hygiene services for chemical, noise, or respiratory protection. • Conducting inspections to identify hazards and make recommendations. • Other health and safety related duties may be assigned as necessary.

The internship experience allows students the opportunity to integrate knowledge and skills in manners that are mutually beneficial. Required Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a safety or industrial hygiene-related bachelor’s degree program.
  • At least one year of study successfully completed with the intent to attend the subsequent term as a full-time student.
  • Strong Microsoft software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of OSHA’s General Industry and Construction regulations.
  • Ability to work on teams or independently and maintain a close attention to detail.
  • Must have an unrestricted, valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs and have manual dexterity.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment including air-purifying respirators, hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing.
