Graduate Coordinator for Student Media

GRADUATE STUDENT COORDINATOR FOR STUDENT MEDIA

The Graduate Student Coordinator for Student Media is a graduate position within the Department of Student Community Development. This position is integral to the advisement, support and development of Stony Brook University’s Student Media Services operation, the student media and news organizations, the Student Media Council (SMC), and University radio station operation (WUSB 90.1/107.3fm) Radio Station. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Student Media.


 

Position tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the advisement, training, supervision,support of Student Media organizations, staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Plan and implement programs, special events, and activities sponsored by and for Student Media
  • Assist in the coordination and development of Student Media Council activities including scheduling meetings, planning agendas, and implementation of SMC public service projects.
  • Serve as a liaison to on and off campus groups that serve and interact with Student Media
  • Coordinate the planning, preparation, and execution of WUSB-FM yearly fundraiser Radiothon (Underwriting, program guide development, listener audience research and special events projects)
  • Assist in the social media and marketing of the Student Media Office and related University Initiatives
  • Assist in developing monthly newsletter,press releases and public service announcements
  • Assist in the refinement of media service and leadership opportunities through administrative support and student leadership training and development
  • Represent Assistant Director, SMC or radio station at scheduled events programs, conferences, and meetings
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings; assess office functions and offer suggestions where appropriate
  • Assist with departmental events and committees as requested; represent the department on panels as needed
  • Assist with developing and conducting training sessions/workshops for departmental student staff
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
  • Other duties as assigned


 

Remuneration
This is an hourly paid student assistant position for graduate students.The successful candidate will be expected to work approximately 20-29 hours per week at the rate of $17.50 per hour throughout the year. Tuition remission, parking fees/permits, health insurance and retirement benefits are not included as part of this position. Number of hours subject to change based on yearly budget and scheduling approvals.


 

Skills and Qualifications 

Required:

  • Must be enrolled as a full time graduate student at Stony Brook University for the full 2023-2024 academic year, and the 2024-2025 academic year and be available for staff training throughout the semester.
  • Applicants must be in good judicial and academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.75 (for current students)
  • Demonstrated effective use of organizational and planning skills, and managing workflow in a fast paced work environment. Event planning and execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects and to work autonomously
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Publisher, Google Apps Office Suite, and social media platforms.Ability to learn other software programs.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbally, written, and interpersonally)
  • Previous experience working collaboratively as part of a diverse team,and both establishing and maintaining effective peer and supervisory relationships
  • Willing and able to work the full academic year, as well as summer/winter intersessions as needed. Ability to lift or carry up to 20 pounds and travel between multiple locations on campus


 

Preferred:

  • Experience and/or knowledge in at least one of the following areas: fundraising, customer service, media, communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, human resources, accounting and not-for-profit business management, finance management, music, psychology and higher education administration.
  • Strong administrative office skills, basic website knowledge, graphic design, fundraising, social media marketing, event planning, copy editing; strong written and verbal communication skills                          
  • Audio recording, editing, streaming experience, newspaper, TV, radio, news, A/V, photography, operations, technical/theater production, arts management, some music knowledge.
