The Rockland County Department of Public Transportation is seeking a candidate to work in the Transportation Planning unit.  The candidate will perform technical support and liaison work involving responsibility for assisting in the implementation and monitoring of the County Travel Demand Management (TDM) program, to increase public awareness of commuting options and related transportation issues. Evening work is occasionally required. 

Candidate must possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of travel demand management and working knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations and programs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with others and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to use computer applications and software programs applicable to analysis and tracking of transportation data.

The individual will assist with the collection and analysis of data related to local and regional travel patterns. Work with local and regional transit providers to ensure county, state and federal goals and initiatives are effectively communicated and implemented.  Assist in the implementation of mobility programs and prepare a variety of state and federal reports. Conduct outreach regarding Air Quality Action Programs that promote alternative travel options. Attend meetings and outreach events that promote alternative travel programs and options to reduce single occupant vehicle (SOV) use.

The work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level administrator. 

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher and three (3) years of professional or technical experience in the field of transportation planning and/or public transportation. 
  • Clerical experience or experience as a laborer or driver or related shall not be qualifying.

Other Requirements and Information:

  • Residency in Rockland County is a requirement for this position.
  • This is a competitive position in Civil Service and reachability on a test would be a requirement for permanent appointment.
