Purpose of the position

Kalmar USA, Inc. (Ottawa, KS) is seeking to fill multiple Sr. Automation Engineer Positions. Role will be responsible for the design, development, documentation, functionality testing and revision of embedded SW code and applications used to operate, manage and interface with embedded microcontrollers, sensors and integrated CAN comm networks incorporated, for example, as part of  hydraulic control systems and power drive control systems etc., incorporated on Kalmar Autoshuttle shuttle carriers, Kalmar AutoStrad straddle carriers and Kalmar Automated Stacking Cranes, in order to ensure that the auto sys on Kalmar cranes and carriers delivered to customers operate satisfactorily and integrate with customers' existing systems. 

 

Main tasks and responsibilities

Responsible for the design and development, architecture documentation, functionality testing and revision control of embedded SW code used to manage, operate and communicate with hardware peripherals and file systems within embedded devices as well as to create operator interfaces with embedded devices through both wireless and fiber-based networks.

 Interfacing with electrical or systems engineers in order to gather and analyze requirements related to SW supported machine functions. Designing and implementing embedded machine control and comm SW applications and application components in C, C++, Assembly, and SQL in multiple application frameworks, including Q-T, and on multiple operating platforms, including Linux and Windows, based on Matlab models, functional design docs, SW engineering requirements and applicable industry standards, such as CAN, which optimize and balance the following goals: run-time performance, memory requirements, simplicity and correctness, dev time and effort, reusability, extendibility, reliability and safety.

Creating SW requirements specs that have correct and sufficient details for SW implementation. Participating in the SW testing, including the development of automated test plans, test scripts and unit tests. Testing, troubleshooting and debugging embedded sys SW issues through rigorous testing, including the development and execution of automated test plans, test scripts and unit tests, and then document resolutions to the issues. 

Developing updates to sys SW documentation to support changes in requirements and related subsystems or systems. 

Assisting with the development and testing of the on-board peripheral and operator comm networks utilized for machine control operations, including configuring PLC and HMI system as well as creating SCADA interfaces. 

Assisting with the design, development, programming, testing, implementing and tuning of stored procedures and DB server engines that facilitate access and query of the back-end object-oriented and relational DB sys employed for machine control. 

Maintaining awareness of embedded SW dev activities to maximize the reuse of existing internal or external SW components in order to shorten the product dev cycle as well as increase productivity and quality.

Configuring wireless devices for smart comm interfaces. Implementing Modbus and Profinet comm sys.

 Designing ladder logic using schematics and troubleshooting real-time issues related to ladder logic. 

Performing PLC hardware configuration and troubleshooting for comm sys and VFD (variable frequency drive) electro-mechanical drive sys.

 Peer-reviewing other SW engineers' changes/designs. Assisting in field testing of SW and sys developed. 

Anticipating operational problems by studying operating targets, modes of op, unit limitations as well as monitoring unit performance. 

Liaising with cross-functional groups as well as OEM and other end customers on issues of sys design, specification, engrng dev and production release to help drive product dev from initial concept design stage through to final product release as well as to resolve post-release op concerns. 

Investigating and evaluating applicable technologies and techniques and introduce promising technologies and techniques into the organization.

 

What you’ll need to succeed

Master's degree in field of Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or Computer Engineering.

Four months middleware administration experience for machine automation performing the design, development, implementation, support, troubleshooting, or maintenance of: embedded middle-tier applications for the programmable logic controller (PLC) and human machine Interface (HMI) sys; SCADA interfaces to acquire data from sensors and network devices connected to PLC and HMIs; Modbus or Profinet comm sys; and programmable automation controllers (PAC).

 Position may be performed from anywhere in U.S.  Position requires limited travel (10%) to customer sites at container port and terminal sites located throughout the U.S.
