Brief Description: Employee will prepare construction documents and/or permit applications for natural gas distribution or electric utility projects under the direction of an experienced supervisor.

Examples* of Work/Duties:

  • Performs moderate design tasks (e.g., gas main and service layout, temporary traffic control plan preparation, bill of materials preparation)
  • Performs research and investigations (e.g., review of historic records to determine status of existing gas pipes)
  • Analyzes and interprets data (e.g., use of historic records, aerial photographs, tax maps, and on-street utility markouts to determine system layouts)
  • Works closely with technical and administrative staff (e.g., coordination with administrative staff to ensure road-opening permit applications are properly prepared and delivered)
  • Performs a thorough review of completed work. Staff of all levels are responsible for ensuring the quality of their own work, with experienced staff also responsible for review of others’ work.
  • Senior Designers with relevant experience will also be responsible for training and mentoring entry-level Designers, coordinating with utility clients and public review agencies (e.g., NJDOT), assisting project managers with project management tasks (e.g., schedule and budget related planning), and completing more-involved design tasks (e.g., preparation of detailed plans for horizontal directional drilling under existing roadways)

Requirements (Education, Licensing, Certifications, etc.):

  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field
  • 0-8 years of experience
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification preferred (NJ PE license track)
  • Proficient in:
    • Microsoft Office
    • AutoCAD
  • Background check and drug test may be administered for work with utility clients
  • Experience in the underground utility sector or familiarity with linear construction principles is preferred, but not required

Work Environment: Full-time in-office attendance initially required with potential for hybrid in-office/work-from-home option possible once proficient at assigned tasks. Limited field-based work may also be required. Paid overtime possible depending on departmental workload.
