Description:                The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.   

The Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking motivated and dedicated candidates for the position of Accountant I for the Administrative Services Division – Fiscal Services located in Milford. Fiscal Services is responsible for the purchasing of goods, contracting for services, and managing Accounts Payable for the (14) institutions and various divisions located across the state.  The incumbent of this postilion will possess personal and professional integrity, strong communication skills, and strong analytical and decision-making skills. 

General Statement of Duties (may include any or all of the following):

  • Purchasing, budgeting, accounts receivable, billing, and accounts payable.  

 

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities (may include any or all of the following):

  • Process requests for purchase orders.
  • Maintain purchase orders in the open file and monitors this file on a daily basis to ensure receiving of goods and services in a timely manner.  
  • Prepare payment vouchers for goods and services rendered.
  • Utilize MMARS, COMMBUYS, Central Information Warehouse, Microsoft applications and any other approved systems. 
  • Enter information and maintain accurate spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel database; including but not limited to, prepares and reconciles financial statements and reports, maintains accounts and records such as weekly budget reports and encumbrance/payment logs.
  • Communicate with agency personnel, oversight agencies and vendors via telephone, written or in person to resolve accounting discrepancies, obtain statistical data, documentation, or various reports.  
  • Provides technical assistance to various institutional and division staff to ensure compliance with agency laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned or required by the Unit (i.e., typing, filing, faxing, drafting forms, memos, telephone coverage, etc.).

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, or (B) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in accounting or auditing, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions below.  

Substitutions:  

I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required (A) experience. *  

II. Successfully completed education in accounting or business administration in a recognized business school or school of accounting may be substituted for the required (A) experience on the basis of one year of such education above the high school level for six months of the required (A) experience. *  

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.  

NOTE:  No substitution will be permitted for the required (B) experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, Microsoft applications. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
