Northfield Middle School BLAST Summer Internship (CCCE)
**NOTE: This is a low or unfunded opportunity. You will be eligible to apply for summer internship funding from Carleton if you will be returning to campus in the fall.
Description:
Summer BLAST is seeking an intern to serve as Blast Youth Enrichment Intern for the five-week program. Summer BLAST is a free program for Middle School students that strives to develop academic skills and abilities through engaging enrichment opportunities. Youth work with licensed teachers in hands-on activities that build academic skills and then participate in enrichment clubs and opportunities.
BLAST is in session Mondays-Thursdays from July to mid-August (9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.). The Internship would begin June 17 and run through August 16th. The timing of this internship would allow for the intern to combine this internship with working Carleon’s Reunion weekend or Lighten Up resue sale. We are looking to hire one Carleton student for this internship.
The primary duties of the Intern would be to schedule and coordinate club activities, and organize supplies in partnership with the Targeted Services and Community School Coordinators, licensed teachers, and staff. These would include, but are not limited to, cooking sessions and service learning activities.
Goals the Intern will help organizations accomplish – What are the deliverables?
This leadership position will enhance the learning opportunities for students by developing, planning and helping implement meaningful learning activities.
Responsibilities would include communicating with teachers and staff about activities, planning the activity and ensuring supplies and equipment are available (for example, weekly shopping for cooking ingredients), and using supplies effectively and efficiently. Interns are expected to be onsite during programming assisting with attendance and planning for the future activities, participating in or leading enrichment clubs..
Training/Resources
The Targeted Services Coordinator and BLAST Site Leader will be responsible for training the Intern and providing direction and resources. The entire BLAST team will support and work with the Intern throughout the summer.
Supervision/Mentorship
The Targeted Services Coordinator will serve as the supervisor for the Intern. The coordinator will provide as much direction as needed, but the Intern is able to have quite a bit of autonomy within the parameters of the program.
What skills will the student develop?
The Intern will be an integral, valued member of the BLAST team as they work together to provide a quality summer experience for middle school youth. The Intern will strengthen communication, organizational and planning skills as well as be able to utilize their creativity to develop projects that actively engage students. Learning to be flexible and adapt if things are not working as planned is an important skill that anyone working with youth needs to develop and continually build. We believe mistakes are simply part of the learning process. Most importantly, the Intern will have the opportunity to build positive relationships with a diverse group of students and be a caring adult in their lives.
