Public Policy Internship (CCCE)
**NOTE: This is a low or unfunded opportunity. You will be eligible to apply for summer internship funding from Carleton if you will be returning to campus in the fall.
Position Summary:
The Public Policy Intern will work closely with Laura Baker Services Association's (LBSA) Executive Director to assist in the development and execution of LBSA’s Advocacy Plan and assist the organization with communicating advocacy efforts to the public. The goal is to make it easy for members of our community to voice their policy concerns in a simple, unified manner and to engage the broader community.
Organization Summary:
Laura Baker Services Association (LBSA) is located in Northfield, Minnesota and we have been providing housing and support services to individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) since 1897. LBSA provides a full spectrum of supportive living options that can meet the level of service that is most appropriate for each individual.
Advocacy Objectives:
1.) Utilize VoterVoice to Increase Advocacy Engagement
- Work closely with LBSA’s Executive Director to identify key VoterVoice reports and capabilities.
- Assist with drafting content to be sent out via VoterVoice.
- Identify unused aspects of VoterVoice that LBSA can leverage to effectively advocate and engage the community.
2.) Create public policy messages in focus areas
- Draft advocacy content for use on LBSA social media pages and other communication methods.
- Assist with contacting key legislators to schedule meetings to discuss IDD services issues and needs.
- Research and develop infographics that LBSA can leverage in advocacy communications.
3) Increase community member engagement in advocacy
- Contribute new ideas that LBSA can leverage to engage the community.
- Monitor the effectiveness of current LBSA advocacy efforts through a review of VoterVoice reports and other reporting.
Desired intern outcomes, and tasks responsibilities:
- Learn LBSA’s key advocacy focus and messaging.
- Identify, review, and compile reports from existing state and national data sources.
- Develop and refine advocacy messaging and communications for the next legislative session.
- Draft social media advocacy content as needed.
- Identify IDD industry data and correlate this information to LBSA to help tell its story.
- Engage with other college and student groups e.g., College Friends, and Special Olympics to get them involved in advocacy efforts.
