Spring 2024 Immigration Internship at Brooklyn Legal Services

The Immigrants’ Rights & Advocacy Project (IRAP) at Brooklyn Legal Services is seeking one (1) college student intern for Spring 2024. The internship is unpaid and will run from January through May 2024, with flexible start and end dates. 

About Brooklyn Legal Services and its Immigrants’ Rights & Advocacy Project (IRAP)

Brooklyn Legal Services, part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC), fights poverty and seeks economic, social, and racial justice for low-income Brooklyn residents. Located in Bed-Stuy, IRAP is uniquely situated to respond to the needs of Brooklyn’s vibrant immigrant community. We actively partner with community-based organizations to provide Know Your Rights workshops, training, and free legal advice. We provide comprehensive representation to individuals facing removal, in asylum applications, applications for naturalization, adjustment of status, U and T visas, applications for relief under VAWA, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and more. 

Role and Responsibilities:

Interns receive close supervision and training from experienced immigration practitioners while learning new areas of the law, gaining hands-on experience, and providing an important public service. Interns’ responsibilities will include: 

• Client intake, interviewing, and outreach by phone, in person, and/or in writing 
• Conducting factual development and gathering client information 
• Maintaining information in our electronic case management system 
• Drafting immigration forms and cover letters 
• Assisting with preparing submissions to USCIS or immigration court 
• Partnering with on-staff social worker to provide holistic services 
• Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications: 

• Demonstrated commitment to public service and serving immigrant populations 
• Cultural competence and strong interpersonal skills 
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills 
• Excellent writing skills 
• Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred 
• Junior or Senior  

This is an unpaid part-time internship, but can be done for credit or stipends provided by the respective educational institution. The internship will be hybrid and will require some inperson work at 29 Albany Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 11216. We require at least 10 hours/week.
