Research Analyst - Cyberspace Operations (Entry-Level PhD)

The Operational Evaluation Division (OED) has an immediate opening for a Research Analyst with experience or interest in the analysis of cybersecurity, cyberspace operations, and the use of information technology systems to support military operations. The analysis focuses on both fielded and emerging systems and technologies in the Department of Defense. IDA takes great pride in the rigor, quality, and timeliness of its analyses, which are produced in an atmosphere that encourages independent thinking and objective results. What does research look like in this position?
- Plan and analyze data from operational assessments of DOD networks and systems
- Formulate research questions out of unstructured problems and messy data
- Develop new methodologies for assessments in military cyberspace operations
- Assess the impact of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, large-scale computing, and electromagnetic spectrum operations on cyberspace
- Present findings to mid- and senior-level Defense officials (i.e., presidential appointees, generals, admirals, etc.) through oral presentations and written reports.
What qualifications and skill-sets do you need?
- PhD in a STEM field (such as Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science), or any other data-intensive research field;
- Must have experience using computer programming for data processing and analysis with a language such as R, Python, or MATLAB.
- Must be able to clearly explain technical topics to non-technical audiences.
- Successful completion of a background check is required.
- Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a security clearance with IDA sponsorship
- Regular travel is expected (up to 25%)

- The interview process consists of three steps
- A short screening call with HR;
- A 30 min – 60 min screening call with researchers; and
- A full day interview with various researchers, HR, and OED Director; includes giving a one-hour presentation on a research project.
- Prior to the full day interview, you will be asked to provide:

- 3 contacts that are willing to write letters of recommendation
- A writing sample.
- You will NOT be asked to do a take home / mock work assignment.
