Digital Communications Intern

The  30-hour / week remote internship will work closely with the Outreach and Digital Communications Specialist in the Youth Programs Division to develop a new strategic and creative vision for promoting youth and young adult programs across the National Park Service. This vision will help engage new and current audiences, including students, parents, educators, partners, friends’ groups, and the general public. It will create an exciting opportunity to expand youth and millennial generation interest in national park civic engagement by providing fresh, new ideas, as well as enthusiasm to energize NPS community efforts and inspire stakeholders. Involving young adults in the decision-making process can offer perspectives to improve marketing, advocacy, and outreach to advance NPS relevancy, diversity, and inclusion goals and more. The intern will produce online and digital content for the purpose of expanding awareness about NPS Youth and Young Adult Programs and related opportunities to further outreach and engagement goals to broader communities. Primary Duties and Responsibilities · Creates, edits, and posts video, audio, and text content for dissemination via various online media including, but not limited to: webpages, social media sites, Inside NPS (intranet), and SharePoint sites. · Tracks content creation/generates social media campaigns and opportunities. Reviews and compiles social media statistics and reports to generate measurable outcomes of online activities.

  • Works collaboratively with the Youth Programs Outreach and Digital Communications Specialist to develop content ideas based on popular topics and/or frequently asked questions, including content targeted at specific audiences.
  • Edits current and creates new webpages, photos, features, and highlights
  • Participates regularly in NPS digital communities; monitors information posted on social media platforms; responds appropriately and in a timely way to engage audiences with youth and young adult program opportunities
  • Tracks data and reporting for social media, web pages, programs, and other requests

Compensation: 

  • Weekly Living Allowance: $525 / week (pre-tax) – Assumes a 30 hour / week committment
  • Duty Related Travel: Up to $2,000 is available for the selected intern to be reimbursed for work-related travel expenses.
  • Health Insurance provided
  • Eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship valued at $4,826.50

The intern will work closely with the Outreach and Digital Communications Specialist on various projects. They will gain experience: · Developing, writing, and curating content for social media (Facebook, X (formerly Twitter, and Instagram) · Learning the logistics for organizing a virtual event · Supporting the revamp of the Youth Programs site on nps.gov · Writing content for nps.gov, including youth program stories, interviews, and spotlights · Networking with other interns, volunteers, and staff at NPS.

In addition to networking with park staff and partners through various projects, the intern will also have opportunities to participate in other groups, such as Employee Resource Groups, events and conferences that the Youth Programs team is participating in, and various trainings that may be announced on the NPS’ intranet.

Qualifications: Knowledge, skills, and experience desired:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, business, education, environmental field, or related field.
  • Experience with working with youth and/or diverse audiences
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience with creating and posting content on social media platforms and analytics
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision
  • Must be between 18 and 30 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. National
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
  • Experience in interviewing and video editing a plus, but not required

Work Environment: 
Work will be performed indoors and can be done remotely. If locally based, the intern could come into the DC office. They may travel a couple of times in the year to the DC headquarters, or to a potential conference/event in the area.
