Law Library Shelving Assistant

The University of Iowa Law Library offers a wide range of work assignments for undergraduate and graduate students.  Student Assistants staff the Law Library's service counters, process materials, work with online databases or other software applications, or maintain the building and collections.

Shelving Student Assistants: Shelving Student Assistants are responsible for supporting the access and development of the Law Library’s physical collections. This includes assisting experienced library staff members in shelving library materials, filing updates for subscription materials, and relocating library materials to make space for access and maintenance to the library’s collections.  

 Shelving Student Tasks & Responsibilities: 

o    Shelving new materials in the library’s collections. 

o    Reshelving recently used materials in the library’s collections. 

o    Filing updates (i.e., new pages, pamphlets, pocket parts, etc.) to new and existing serial publications and binders.  

o    Stamping and processing incoming library materials. 

o    Participating in the relocation and/or shifting of library materials.  

o    Facing materials on the shelves.  

o    Performing inventory checks and searching for lost or missing books.  

o    Assisting with other collection-related projects and tasks. 

o    Ability to lift heavy materials (25 – 40 pounds) above shoulder height. 

o    Ability to push or pull a heavy cart of materials (25 – 40 pounds). 

o    Other tasks as assigned.  

 Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

·         Autonomy and the ability to follow written and oral instructions.  

·         Great communication skills and/or the desire to build them. 

·         The ability to thrive in a team environment.  

·         Attention to detail 

·         Ability to accomplish tasks in a self-directed manner, and a willingness to ask questions when instructions are unclear.  

·         Reliable schedule for evening, weekend, and some holiday/break shifts.
