The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 75 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead.
Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895.

With your experience, you will lead a crew during day-to-day facility operations and accomplishing production programs contributing to the sport, tribal, and commercial fisheries in Washington State.
The optimal applicants will lead by example, have a positive can-do attitude, are eager to work hard, and have excellent fish husbandry skills.
You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, and look forward to working with other staff to meet WDFW program goals, answer questions from visitors, and lead tours of the hatchery facilities.
Duties
Here is some of what these positions will be doing:
Crew leader:
- Carries out assignments as a working leader.
- Ensures work quality of the team through training, monitoring, and mentoring.
- Monitors and projects activities to ensure completion in a timely manner.
- Coordinates with state, federal, and tribal co-managers regarding spawning, program goals, eyed egg/fish transfers, and releases.
Fish culture:
- Carries out sound fish culture practices to meet program goals.
- Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices with crew and supervisor.
- Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements.
- Monitors fish health and behavior.
Physical Operation and maintenance of facility:
- Maintains the grounds in appearance and upkeep to include seasonal issues.
- Identifies and communicates ways to improve the physical plant operations.
- Actively identifies safety hazards and takes actions or recommends remedies as appropriate.
- Leads crew on hatchery projects.
Communications:
- Keeps supervisor, management, and coworkers well informed on production issues that may lead to fish health concerns or program shortfalls.
- Disseminates information from management and supervisor in a positive light that leads to compliance and team building.
- Effectively communicates with our Fish Health Veterinarian about concerns/treatments.
Data collection, entry, and reporting:
- Leads others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data required by the program, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintains a facility filing system that is well organized and user friendly.
- Ensures that staff are well informed on where and how to collect and record data.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:
- This position will be required to work both inside and outside in variable conditions, including in very hot and cold weather.
- Requires the ability to work alone or with others in remote locations.
- Must perform strenuous physical activities and be capable of lifting 55lbs.

Schedule:
- Typically, Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
- The work hours can vary depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.

Travel Requirements:
- Very minimal travel is associated with this position.

Tools and Equipment:
- Fish planting truck, pickups, gator, backhoe, chainsaw, table saw, various shop tools and any other tools required at the hatchery.

Customer Interactions:
- Interactions with the public when they visit the facility and will give guided tours when they are scheduled. Also interacts with co-managers to schedule fish transfers and plants.

Standby:
- Standby is currently not assigned, however, it may be required of the position.

Housing:
- Housing is not provided for this position.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
Or
- Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Or
- Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
- Four (4) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
Or
- Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and two (2) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
License:
- Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- First Aid card (can be obtained within 12 months of hire).
- Class B CDL (can be obtained within first 12 months of hire.).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to the required qualifications above, our ideal applicant will also have the following:
- Expert fish culture techniques: rearing procedures, using and applying density and flow indexes, and projecting fish growth.
- Sound knowledge of water dynamics, rearing flows, fish requirements for; DO levels, water chemistry, temperature, and turbidity.
- Advanced Mathematics and Algebra.
- Advanced computer knowledge; spreadsheet formatting, development, and formulas, word processing programs, and email.
- Expert knowledge of WORD, EXCEL, in house loading forms, and agency specific applications.
- Proper calibration and operation of measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of hatchery forms; application and use of key forms; proper procedures, etc.
- Ability to:
- Assist in training employees.
- Work in and out of doors in all weather conditions and temperatures.
- Perform strenuous physical activities such as lifting 50 lbs. feed sacks daily.
- Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.
- Follow instructions and complete assigned tasks using proper protocols.
- Accurately gather and compile data and complete reports.
- Use sound judgment.
- Supervise/lead work crews.
- Work under minimal supervision.
- Be approachable for all staff.
- Have a positive attitude.
- Communicate well orally and in writing.
- Maintain effective working relationships internally and externally.
