Summer Teaching Fellow

June 24-August 2, 2024

At the heart of the Summer@Taft program is a group of teaching fellows who work closely with students in a small residential community. From outstanding colleges and universities, we select 10-12 juniors and seniors who express an interest in education. Fellows experience each facet of boarding school faculty life, enabling them to make more informed decisions regarding their future in the teaching profession. More importantly, the experience provides them the opportunity to work with young people and interact within a collegial school community.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a senior teacher in one major course, beginning as an observer and eventually teaching independently. This approach combines a gradual introduction to classroom teaching with a maximum amount of guidance and support from the senior teacher.
  • Teach or co-teach one afternoon elective course.
  • Assist in the afternoon athletic program.
  • Serve as an advisor to Summer@Taft students.
  • Chaperone various trips and activities.
  • Live in and help supervise dormitories.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have completed their junior or senior year of college.
  • Desired college majors: science, English, mathematics, history, education, world languages, ESL, studio art, and photography.
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Successful candidates will possess good communication skills, be energetic, enthusiastic, passionate, creative, and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in a career in education.
  • Demonstrated interested in athletics.
  • The job demands strong commitment and, because of the residential nature of the program, fellows must be available to chaperone trips and oversee dormitories on weekends.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.

How you will benefit:

  • Fellows are provided with a $4,550 stipend, free housing and board, and teaching materials.
  • Faculty and fellows attend a summer program orientation prior to the opening of Summer@Taft.
  • A weekly seminar led by a senior teacher will cover educational topics.
  • Regular and frequent observations from senior teachers.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to network and to interview with an educational placement service.
  • Each year, approximately half of the fellows go on to teach in independent schools, and the Director of Summer@Taft often provides assistance and support in their decision-making process.

Application procedure:

The following required materials must be received as soon as possible, but by no later than March 1, 2024:

  • A letter expressing your reasons for applying to the fellowship program
  • Your resume
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A recent college transcript

Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.

Completed applications will be reviewed and selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Offers of employment are generally issued within two to three weeks from the date of the interview. The application process is competitive and not all candidates will be offered a position.

Submit the application via email to summer@taftschool.org or mail the materials to:
