Education Policy Intern

About the Role 

New Classrooms is a non-profit working towards a wide-reaching mission of personalizing learning for each and every student. Our policy work centers on supporting and advocating ways to truly enable schools to meet the unique strengths and needs of students and is actively engaged in building capacity for innovative learning models, supporting demand for them, and creating space in policy to allow for new approaches for teaching and learning.

What You Would Do 

As a legislative intern at New Classrooms, you would be a key member of the policy and advocacy team and contribute to the development and execution of strategies to drive policy change to redefine what is possible in K-12 education. 

Federal and State Policy Tracking

  • Monitor and compile legislation in all 50 states and at the federal level related to personalized learning
  • Follow regulatory actions on issues important to New Classrooms such as state revision of K-12 curriculum policies
  • Work with Deputy Director to continue to develop an efficient policy tracking system
  • Analyze publications and policy briefs within project areas at the local, state, and federal level to report to policy team

Federal and State Advocacy Support

  • Provide regular updates to policy team on legislative landscape in key states and at the federal level related to project areas
  • Work in conjunction with policy team to prepare for and attend select meetings with policymakers on issues pertinent to internship role 
  • Work with Deputy Director on internal contact management system to ensure accuracy and efficacy of engagement
  • Work with Deputy Director to support on communications work (e.g. blogs, articles, social media) related to policy

What We Are Looking For 

  • A current college or graduate student who is interested in learning more about education policy
  • Someone with a profound belief in our vision and mission of improving learning outcomes for all students
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with the landscape of K-12 education at the state and federal level is a plus

Role Classification and Benefits

This position is part-time (5-10 hours a week) and paid at an hourly rate of $17 per hour.  Upon hire, the Intern will work with the Deputy Director to establish a working schedule that is aligned with New Classrooms’ working hours.

New Classrooms is a fully remote organization, so access to a computer and quiet space is necessary. The duration of this position is limited from February 2024 to May 2024 (negotiable).
