FPGA Engineering Intern

Primary Function of Position:

The FPGA Design Engineer Intern will work as a part of the engineering team responsible for the design, development, and support of the FPGA designs in the da Vinci Surgical System.  The intern will report to the Sr. Manager of FPGA Engineering and will be involved in designing and/or debugging Verilog-based RTL designs targeted to FPGA devices in the system.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The intern will work in one or more of the following areas in pursuit of solutions to real-world problems facing the FPGA Engineering team:

  • Developing and/or enhancing FPGA modules
  • Enhancing and expanding our Python-based suite of tools for hardware bring-up, debug, and manufacturing test
  • Develop testbenches and tests for simulation of new and existing FPGA modules
  • Developing improved automated test flows for manufacture and system test team.

Qualifications

 

University Hiring Program Eligibility Requirements:

  • University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program in the Fall.
  • Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period starting May or June. Specific start dates are shared during the recruiting process.

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Current enrollment in an Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or related degree-seeking program at the Master’s level. Bachelor level students will also be considered based on specific relevant experience.
  • Enthusiasm and a passion for technology
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience with hardware and FPGA design
  • Proficient with the following:
    • Verilog/SystemVerilog
    • Python
    • FPGA design tools (e.g., Xilinx Vivado/Vitis, QuestaSim)
    • Basic engineering lab equipment (oscilloscope, DMM, etc.)
  • Strong ability to isolate and debug hardware and firmware problems

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay (paid at an hourly rate), benefits, and a housing allowance. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including relevant skills and experience for this internship, degree-seeking academic program (PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s, etc), year in school, and location. The hourly rate is prorated against the intern program salaries listed and total program compensation will be based on internship duration.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $107,100 - $120,700
Base Salary Range Region 2: $91,000 - $102,600
