Paid Summer 2024 Fellow Internship | Maryland Public Service Scholars Program

Apply now for the 2024 Maryland Public Service Scholars fellowship programs! Each year, Maryland’s best and brightest college students (of ALL majors) are selected for paid internships and leadership development opportunities to explore careers in government agencies and nonprofit organizations to make a difference in the lives of Marylanders. 

 

The Maryland Public Service Scholars offers 4 programs: 

  • Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSIP)
  • Sondheim Nonprofit Leadership Program (SNLP)
  • Maryland Dept. of Transportation Fellows Program (MDOT)
  • Sondheim Public Service Law Fellows (for law students only)

Maryland Public Service Scholars have a desire to serve the people of Maryland, are interested in exploring careers in the public and/or social sectors, and are committed to creating positive change in Maryland. While the criteria varies by program, most fellows will be rising Juniors or Seniors in the Summer of 2024. There are some opportunities for graduate students (SNLP).  Students must either be attending a Maryland institution or be a Maryland resident attending school out of state. If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply to the summer 2024 MPSS program!



 

Eligibility Requirements:
 

  • Rising Junior or Senior in the summer of participation (*and current graduate students, in the summer of participation, for SNLP)
  • Attending a Maryland institution OR a current Maryland resident attending an out-of-state institution
  • GPA 2.7 or above
  • Available May 28 – August 9, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm
  • Students must have the ability to be in Central Maryland 2-3 days a week
  • Internships are open to students with any major



 

 

There are two IMPORTANT deadlines for the application:

 

Priority Deadline - November 15th, 2023
 

Final Deadline - March 1st, 2024



 

What will I need to apply?
 

  • 2 professional/academic references (submit their info early to give them time to complete form)
  • Resume
  • Transcript (unofficial copy is fine)
  • Personal Statement (500-800 words)
  • Writing Sample (800-1500 words)

What does participation in a Public Service Scholars fellowship entail?


 

Each program is comprised of these components:

 

[Experience]

Fellows are placed at a government agency full-time under the mentorship of a senior-level professional
 

[Exploration]

Fellows attend an orientation and seminars to strengthen their understanding of the functions of state government and policy making and participate in reflection activities throughout the program

[Exposure]

Fellows attend meetings, events, field trips, and networking opportunities to connect with Maryland’s leaders

 

[Equity] 

Fellows engage in a multi-step reflection process which explores their own relationship to social justice and equity


[Practice]

Fellows work together in groups to put their knowledge and skills into practice, researching and preparing a policy analysis and recommendation to present to the Governor
