Diversity Summer Health Research Education Program
The Diversity Summer Health-Related Research Education Program provides carefully selected undergraduate or postbaccalaureate students who are members of historically disadvantaged and underrepresented groups (as outlined by the NIH here: https://extramural-diversity.nih.gov/diversity-matters/disadvantaged-backgrounds) in the health science professions the opportunity to come stay in Milwaukee, WI and participate in programming at our MCW main campus to stimulate their interest in careers in medicine, biomedical research-and allied health. DSHREP emphasizes academic preparation, achievement, and career awareness.
Students must demonstrate a serious interest in a medical or allied health career and meet the following criteria:
- 3.4 Undergraduate Science and Math GPA Required.
- Completion of at least one year of college (three courses per academic term).
- Open to students at all undergraduate institutions.
Applicants will need to request an official transcript. Transcripts should be mailed directly to the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity using the address provided under the contact information. Before beginning your application, you will need the following information about your recommenders: Name, Title, Email Address and Phone Number.
The application process should take about half an hour, please be sure to allot ample time to complete the form without interruption. Once you begin the application, it is recommended that you complete it in its entirety.
Important DSHREP Program Dates
Application:
- Opens: Late October
- Closes: February 1
Program Dates:
- May 28 (move-in)
- May 29 – May 31 (orientation)
- June 3 (day one in lab)
- August 2 (final day)
Participants can expect a time commitment of 10 weeks from the end of May through early August; generally 40 hours during the weekdays with some evening events.

Submit two (2) Science-related electronic recommendations. You will receive an email link to be forwarded to your recommenders to complete the process. Mailed recommendations are not accepted.
Be available for the entire duration of the 10-week program. Again, commitment is an estimated 40 hours per week.
