Industrial Hygiene Intern (Paid - Jacksonville, FL)
Job Summary:
Industrial Hygiene Intern will be placed within the Industrial Hygiene Department, Public Safety and Health for a 10 week immersion in CSX methods and culture. Individuals complete challenging assignments that will enhance their skill sets in recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, and biological hazards. The Industrial Hygiene internship will provide an opportunity for candidates to experience what a role as a railroad industrial hygienist looks like, while allowing CSX to actively recruit tomorrow’s best talent.
Internship Details:
- This is a 10 Week Summer Internship Program starting on May 20, 2024 and ending July 26, 2024. (Location: CSX HQ or minimal hybrid/remote)
- CSX provides optional intern housing for the duration of the 10-week program, as long as the selected intern meets eligibility criteria

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
Individuals play a key role in completing identified Industrial Hygiene projects such as
- Combination of office work and field work with members of the CSX Industrial Hygiene team.
- Industrial Hygiene qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for noise and various chemical agents
- Review of CSX personal protective equipment of respiratory protection, hearing protection, and welding
- Familiarization of CSX OSHA programs such as Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Lock Out / Tag Out, Confined Spaces, Hearing Conservation, and Emergency Action Plans
- Familiarization of FRA Occupational Noise Exposure for Railroad Operating Employees and Locomotive Cab Noise Standard
- Review of Health and Safety Plans for emergency response
- Cross functional project to attend one Environmental review and one Hazmat training event
- Present internship accomplishments to senior management in the department
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Industrial or Safety Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related major field of study from an accredited institution.
- Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4-point scale).
Knowledge and Skills:
- Academic distinction with topics such as Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Air Sampling, Exposure Assessment, Toxicology, Safety Engineering, Engineering Controls, and OSHA standards.
- Proven leadership ability and initiative.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations to a senior level audience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
