DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Environmental Trainees are hired into a 12-month training program, which consists of on-the-job training to learn the duties of an environmental inspector in a specific environmental field. Employees in the trainee position will learn applicable regulations and policies and assist more experienced employees in performing inspections of assigned facilities. This position will participate in a one-year, on-the-job training program to learn the duties of a Surface Mine Conservation Inspector. Specific duties will include being responsible to reconnoiter areas above active underground mines, both longwall and room and pillar operations, as well as monitoring underground areas before, during, and after mining

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel is required for these positions but does not typically include overnight stays. 
  • DEP vehicles can be signed out to facilitate travel to and from inspection sites. 
  •  Inspections may require employees to negotiate uneven or rough terrain, sometimes while carrying test equipment.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Coal Center.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

 

QUALIFICATIONS
  Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Necessary Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
