Collections Intern

This premier opportunity allows UR students to access traditionally unpaid opportunities that highlight the value of the humanities in the workplace. If selected, students will receive a $5,000 stipend over a minimum 270-hour period in a non-for-profit organization in the Rochester, NY region.

Scope of Internship:

Visual Studies Workshop is accepting applications for a Collections Internship in Summer 2024. Internships at VSW are 30 hours per week for 9 weeks, and take place during hours of operation, Tuesday-Friday 11am - 5 pm. Specific schedules will be determined based on applicants’ availability.

Interns at VSW will receive training and hands-on experience working with analog film and video tools and objects, lantern slides and 35mm still image materials in an archival environment. Current projects include: organizing and creating an inventory of film, video and still image-related archive materials; researching history of materials in the still and moving image collections; organizing metadata; assisting with re-housing and relocation of collection objects; scanning objects and more.

Skills:

• Interns should have basic familiarity with both digital and analog media (film and video and photography)
• Ability to carefully handle archival materials and objects; competency with reading and creating spreadsheets
• Attention to detail
• Research skills
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
• Experience with digital scanning, video editing, Adobe Suite is preferred.

Compensation:

Interns will receive a $5,000 stipend through the University of Rochester 2024 Humanities for Life (HFL) Summer Internship Program, funded by a gift from Schwartz Community-Based Internships.

Visual Studies Workshop nurtures experimental and expansive approaches to photography and media arts, and builds community among artists and the public through exhibitions, publications and residencies. VSW envisions a society that values the human need to create and share ideas.

We are an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Rochester in 1969. The collections at VSW showcase the aesthetics, cultural history, and social uses of still and moving images. Holdings encompass both creative work and vernacular objects, as well as items that represent the history of media use. All collections are open to the public by appointment.
