Near Peer Mentor for the GEMS Program

Are you a STEM or Education major interested in gaining leadership and hands on laboratory experience? Looking for a summer internship opportunity that allows you to work alongside U.S. Army Research Scientists and make amazing career connections while giving back to your community?

Becoming a Near Peer Mentor for the  (Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program is a great way to gain skills while inspiring the next generation to become scientists, engineers, doctors, and leaders. 

The Fort Detrick location of the GEMS program has Near Peer Mentors as the main instructors to 500+ student attendees between the grades of 4-11 in eight possible STEM-based curricula. Near Peer Mentors will be working in class groups of 3-5 Near Peer Mentors with some Near Peer Mentors who flex between classes where needed.  Near Peer Mentors undergo a two-week training period where the Near Peer Mentors work closely with Department of Defense scientists and engineers to learn practical skills in areas such as laboratory experiments, coding, engineering, and robotics. Near Peer Mentors then teach the approved curricula to student attendees over a five-week period, repeating the curriculum weekly to a new cohort of students. Teachers and GEMS staff are available to be guides  and resources throughout the summer.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teach GEMS student attendees STEM-based curricula
  • Supervise students attendees at all times
  • Prepare laboratory materials
  • Learn and implement protocols and procedures
  • Foster positive attitudes in student attendees toward STEM
  • Maintain ethical behavior at all times; act as a role model and mentor for the GEMS student attendees
  • Other duties as assigned

To participate In Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP) internships, you must be:

  • At least 16 years old at the time of application
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Able to pass a U.S. Army Childcare background check
