We hire students in all majors. Interested applicants should be friendly and personable, have a growth mindset, and be interested in making connections across campus. Tutors receive training before working with students and regular support through weekly small group staff meetings. We accept applications all year as openings sometimes occur mid-semester based on unexpected student need. Our greatest need for Spring 2024 for the following classes:

  • BUS/ECN 2340
  • CHM 2080 (prefer candidates available MWF 2:50-3:55)
  • CHM 3010 (prefer candidates available MWF 2:50-3:55 )
  • CSC 1820 (prefer candidates available MWF 2:50-3:55)
  • Mathematics (prefer candidates who can tutor multiple courses)

Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have earned a B or higher in the class being tutored
  • Recommendation from a faculty member in the appropriate department or program
  • Interview with Director of Peer Tutoring and current tutor(s)
  • Commitment to attend pre-service and ongoing tutor training, and regular staff meetings

Responsibilities:

  • Provide collaborative support to students in the classes you are assigned to tutor
  • Set and maintain tutoring schedule
  • Coordinate with other tutors in your discipline
  • Communicate with faculty and outreach to students to promote your schedule
  • Make appropriate student referrals to Carthage offices when necessary
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of each tutoring interaction
  • Attend and complete tutor training and development sessions
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Follow the policies of the Office of Peer Tutoring

Time Commitment:

Tutors should be available to work with students at least 4 hours per week and also attend a 1-hour staff meeting (for a minimum of 5 hours per week total). Actual hours worked can fluctuate based on student demand. Tutors also have opportunities to do project-based work to help them support students outside of direct tutoring.
