Genetic Counselor 1
The Department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full-Time Genetic Counselor 1 to work at UHealth. The Genetic Counselor 1 provides genetic counseling, education, and psychological support for those with genetic disorders, birth defects, positive newborn screening results or who are at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.
- Establishes and maintains partnerships with community and disease organizations.
- Develops educational and promotional materials.
- Interacts with and supervises genetic counseling students and other medical trainees.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, according to federal, local, and state guidelines and regulations.
- Assist with drafting and editing relevant sections of study protocols, informed consent documents and other study materials (e.g. informational brochures)
- Recruit and enroll study participants, coordinate study visits, and assist with collection of study data
- Provide counseling for research participants who may undergo genetic testing
- Assist with the interpretation of variants from next generation sequencing (on a research basis)
- Participate in patient/community outreach activities to help promote and sustain the research program
- Provide genetic counseling, education and psychological support for those with genetic neuromuscular disorders, or who may be at risk for such disorders.
- Work in partnership with the neurologist and allied health professionals within the context of multi-disciplinary specialty clinics (e.g. Muscular Dystrophy Association, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, ALS), to manage care for patients with genetic neuromuscular disorders

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in relevant field
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
- Certifications in relevant specialty or field
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
