Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern

Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Co-op will be involved in next generation product development for the surgical environment including surgical capital equipment and virtual operating room digital integration systems. The team environment consists of a well-rounded cross functional new product development team. The intern will be responsible for basic CAD design tasks, assembling and other model shop activities. There will also be exposure to processes and documentation required to successfully develop capital medical equipment and an opportunity to gain hands on experience with rapid prototyping methodology and product testing.
Duties
- Assist with components/assemblies design
- Utilize Pro/E CAD to create 3D models of the design and detailed 2D drawings
- Develop demonstrations of various new product concepts
- Build and test functional prototypes to demonstrate product concepts.
- Collect and analyze data
- Develop mathematical models, applying statistics and equation describing physical phenomena
- Follow industry codes, standards, and recommendations
- Take part in design review and verification
- Organize and document testing and product development process
- Research various technologies and materials, communicating results and findings
- Maintain a safe working environment and follow all safety procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (safety glasses, etc., as required) in the labs.
- Create and/or update documents such as AS400 BOM’s and Process Specs, Standard Work, Tool Sheets, Total Productive Maintenance Sheets
- Create Special Manufacturing Requests as required
- Conduct Time Studies
- Resolve process problems
Education Degree
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Required Experience
- Aptitude for graphic design.
- Requires organizational, communication, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills and a mature approach to cross functional working environments.
- Sketching, Model Making, Ideation, Visual and Verbal Communication, UI/UX, Graphic Design, CAD modeling, Video Editing, Human Factors, Interaction
- SolidWorks, KeyShot, Adobe Products, SketchBook Pro, Survey Monkey, SharePoint, Microsoft Office
- Mechanical skills
- Understanding of metalworking and metalworking equipment preferred
Preferred Experience
- Lab based coursework as well as practical experience in designing, building and testing electro-mechanical prototypes is highly desired.
- Basic proficiency in CAD is highly desired.
- Experience or interest in computer programming using applications such as LabView is also desired.
Skills
- Ability to gather and analyze web-based information and information from STERIS subject matter experts.
- Ability to read, understand and apply user manuals to learn how to implement and control various commercial products.
