Management Aide (Intern II)

The City of Torrance is currently accepting applications for the Management Aide (Intern II) Internship Program!
 

Management Aides assist with assignments ranging from routine administrative tasks to more complex and varied professional, confidential and specialized assignments. This internship provides a unique opportunity for experiential learning and valuable experience in public service by working with constituents, conducting community outreach efforts, research/surveys, report writing, data compilation, oral presentations, and analysis.

Community Services Department

The Management Aide in the Community Services Department will split their time between the Administration and Cultural Services Division. The Management Aide will be responsible for researching and supporting park projects and services proposals, and data entry and reporting while working in the Administration Division. While working at the Cultural Services Division, the Management Aide will assist with special event clerical and media preparation, Museum and satellite location exhibit support and data entry and reporting.

Required skills are experience with Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Power Point).

Hours:  The Management Aide for the Community Services Department is expected to commit 30 hours per week.   

Office of the City Manager

The Management Aide in the Office of the City Manager works closely with executive and management staff in a number of areas including council agenda preparation; community relations; economic development and land use; City Council relations; legislation; and community outreach efforts.

The Management Aide may also have the opportunity to gain experience in other City Departments, based on interest and availability.

Preferred Field of Study: Public Policy, Public Administration and Business Administration, Finance, or related field.

Hours:  The Management Aide for the Office of the City Manager assignment is expected to commit 30-35 hours per week, and must attend Tuesday night Council meetings, which start at 6:30 p.m.  Evenings are required as needed.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

How to qualify for the internship: The Management Aide is an entry-level position for recent graduates of a Bachelor's program, current graduate students, and recent graduates of a Master's program in Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related field, with six months of experience in a public sector setting and an interest in pursuing a career in public administration.

Ideal Candidate for ALL assignments:

In addition to the above requirements, the most successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Well organized, self starter who can work with minimum supervision;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of principles and practices of office management and equipment; 
  • Excellent oral and written skills and the ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions; 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public;
  • Desire to gain experience in the public sector and may be considering a career in local government; and
  • Someone who is eager to learn and is flexible in taking on various assignments.
