SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2)

One (1) Position – Season Length: 9 months – September 16 – June 15
One (1) Position – Season Length: 8 months – October 1 – May 30 

Jump into the field and enhance your fishery knowledge and hands-on field experience. 

Conduct salmonid monitoring on the Newaukum River basin and contribute to adult salmon and steelhead research.

Conducting salmon spawner surveys by identifying, recording, and monitoring salmonid redds and live/dead fish counts.

Duties

Some of what our Newaukum Salmonid Monitoring Technicians will enjoy doing, 

Adult salmonid monitoring: 

  • Maintain accurate and timely field records on iPads and iForms
  • Collect biological data from fish carcasses including sampling for adipose and dorsal fin mark status, scales, coded wire tags (CWT), carcass tags, DNA tissue samples, or other biological samples as needed.

 

Driving to and from stream survey locations: 

  • Will travel to and from survey reaches through Federal, State, and County roads, as well as travel on private (logging) roads throughout the Newaukum River Basin.
  • Will require securing equipment such as rafts for safe travel and operating 4x4 vehicles in slippery condition.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Surveys are conducted on foot and by utilizing rafts and pontoon boats. Fieldwork is often done in inclement weather, within varying stream flow conditions with some survey reaches greater than 10 miles per day. Trail locations to and from stream reaches may also be strenuous.
    • May lift equipment and objects up to or greater than 40 pounds. This includes daily team lifting of rafts, or occasionally by oneself. Additionally, may lift chainsaws and remove obstacles such as logs or trees out of vehicle paths. Will operate 4x4 vehicles in slippery conditions.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • 24/7 non-scheduled. Work hours are flexible due to inclement weather, stream flow patterns, degree of spawning activity, length of daylight hours, and other factors. Field sampling start and end times typically fall outside of the normal 8 to 5 work schedule.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Extensive local driving to and from survey locations each day. No long-distance travel expected.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Personal flotation device (PFD), rafts, axes, saws, fire extinguishers and stream survey gear.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Will interact with the public, landowners, and co-workers.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s license.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with adult salmonid spawning ground surveys.
  • Salmonid redd identification.
  • Experience with data collection.
  • Recreational or professional experience with river environments which may include:
    • Rowing a watercraft on rivers.
    • River rescue training.
    • Moving on, in, or through rivers.
