AmeriCorps Outdoor Education Assistant

The Palouse Roots Assistant Educator will lead children and groups in environmental education activities and field trips at the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute. They will help teach new skills and support appreciation and love for our natural world. All AmeriCorps members and Staff work collaboratively and independently at times in restoration, Nature Center, education, and supporting volunteers. Each individual position also has specific responsibilities that help the overall team provide complete and meaningful experiences in all focus areas. 

Job Tasks and Responsibilities: 

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents, and staff.
• Maintain a safe learning environment/assure the well-being & safety of the children in their care.
• Exhibit a genuine nurturing and caring attitude to all the children.
• Knowledge of and/or desire to learn about plant species and management.
• Be an active learner willing to continue their growth as a teacher.
• Be enthusiastic and prepared to explore the outdoors with children on a daily basis.
• Be willing to follow the child in their interests rather than dictating their day.
• Willingness to get dirty, sit on the ground in exploration, and play.
• Be actively engaged and contribute to developing the emergent curriculum.
• Observe and document the children’s learning, behavior, and development.
• Address the individual needs of each child as they emerge.
• Work directly with other teachers and staff.
• Model kindness, wonder, engagement, and empathy. 
• Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team.

Benefits:

Taxable, monthly living allowance of $10,200 for an 11-month position

$3,447.50 education award upon successful completion of the service term.
