Industrial Section Data Steward (Environmental Specialist 4) (In-Training)

The Solid Waste Management (SWM) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Industrial Section Data Steward (Environmental Specialist 4) (In-Training) position. This position is located in Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
The Industrial Section is a unique section within Ecology in that we implement air quality, water quality, dangerous waste, and cleanup regulations for certain large industries throughout the state of Washington. In this role, you will be responsible for managing our data in multiple environmental databases and will have the opportunity to learn about and interact with many different programs within Ecology. You will coordinate closely with the other data stewards in our section to ensure the section meets its data requirements, including identifying and recommending solutions to keep the section’s data management in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency and program expectations.

Tele-work options for this position: This position embraces the modern work environment, where you may telework up to 2 days each week. Note: This position offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Environmental Specialist field and achieve the goal class of an Environmental Specialist 4 (ES4). Duties
This position is located within the Industrial Section at the Department of Ecology which oversees the environmental regulation of a specific set of large industries throughout the State. The Industrial Section focuses on the environmental regulation of Kraft pulp and paper mills, oil refineries, aluminum smelters, and a handful of chemical manufacturing facilities.
What makes this role unique?
In addition to becoming an expert in a variety of environmental databases, in this role, you will be exposed to complex data management requirements that require you to use your strong communication and problem-solving skills.
What you will do:
- Lead the data management work for assigned facilities.
- Assist engineers with various compliance related tasks.
- Serve as back-up for data management work for the other facilities in the section.
- Lead section’s participation in data workgroups for assigned databases.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
At the Environmental Specialist 3 level: Pay Range 53 ($4,602 - $6,198 – monthly) (In-Training)
