Assistant Vice President, Brooklyn Borough Director

Position Overview: The Government and Community Relations Division (GovCo) helps bridge the gap between the work of NYCEDC and the needs and ideas of New Yorkers impacted by our projects. We advance EDC’s agenda and ensure projects advance smoothly by cultivating external relationships, developing public engagement strategies, and building political and community support for EDC’s projects.

As a key member of our dynamic team, the GovCo Brooklyn Borough Director will be responsible for working in Brooklyn developing, maintaining, and coordinating NYCEDC’s relationships with federal, state, and local elected officials and government agencies; community boards; community stakeholders; labor; advocates; private stakeholders; and the Mayor’s Office of Federal, State, and City Legislative Affairs, in order to facilitate the successful completion of NYCEDC’s projects and the achievement of NYCEDC’s priorities. The GovCo Brooklyn Borough Director will work with project teams to share stakeholder input, and design and advise on engagement strategies and messaging as the day-to-day community liaison for NYCEDC’s work in the borough. The GovCo Brooklyn Borough Director may assist in the development, implementation, and management of key strategies critical to the mission of NYCEDC, as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work in consultation with NYCEDC divisions to identify and implement strategies to facilitate achievement of NYCEDC’s goals and priorities.
  • Assist NYCEDC project managers in developing presentations to elected officials, community boards, and other stakeholders regarding progress/status of NYCEDC projects; respond to inquiries regarding projects from elected officials and stakeholders.
  • Communicate regularly with representatives of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development and the Mayor’s Offices of Federal, State, and City Legislative Affairs to ensure that projects and priorities reflect and complement the priorities of the Office of the Mayor.
  • Ensure that timely and sensitive information is appropriately communicated to department leadership and President’s Office.
  • Collaborate with other New York City agencies on planning and implementing inter-agency initiatives and projects.
  • Design and assess engagement strategies that incorporate a diverse set of perspectives, acknowledge history and centers equity. These strategies should utilize quantitative and qualitative data, and in coordination with NYCEDC’s Public Affairs team, incorporate earned media and digital communication tools.
  • Prepare written reports/updates on project portfolio, including developing newsletter content and updating trackers, as requested; prepare NYCEDC staff for and participate in hearings before the New York City Council, as assigned.
  • Enhance NYCEDC’s image and reputation through effective community outreach and representation.
  • Represent NYCEDC at community and outreach events.

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years of experience working with elected officials, public agencies, campaigns, communications, labor, organizing, and/or community-based organizations. Experience staffing elected officials or organization leadership preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience building coalitions among groups with diverse interests.
  • Highly organized individual, capable of prioritizing competing interests in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment.
  • Ability to travel within five boroughs of New York City and attend evening and occasional weekend meetings. Driver’s license preferred.
  • Familiarity with New York City land use public approval processes and legislative processes.
  • Additional language proficiency, such as Spanish and/or Creole, preferred not required.
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent with a concentration in public policy, political science, media/communications, community planning, or other relevant expertise preferred.
  • New York City residency is required within 180 days of hire.
