Boiler/Welder Specialist

Are you looking for full-time year-round employment and want to enjoy 12 paid holidays each year? If so, the Utah Department of Corrections is looking for a Boiler/Welding Specialist to work in their new Salt Lake Utah Correctional Facility.

 

The Boiler/Welding Specialist will perform the following:

  • Enforcing security regulations.
  • Skilled in a vocation and able to use related tools and/or equipment proficiently.
  • Inmates are helped to become team-oriented with the goal to enable them to succeed outside of the prison environment.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Experience operating and maintaining high-pressure steam boilers.
  • Experience installing high and low-pressure steam traps.
  • Experience operating and maintaining low-pressure and hydronic boilers.
  • Experience maintaining shell and tube, plate, and frame heat exchange.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have knowledge of welding and fabricating.
  • Experience operating and maintaining water towers.

  This job is NOT public safety certified and does not require peace officer status or certification.

 Example of Duties:

  • Understand the principles and techniques used in the specific service or trade, adherence to industry and/or safety standards and maintenance of related equipment, tools and/or supplies.
  • Works in a team effort to help the maintenance or service operations become successful.
  • Uses and operates a variety of hand tools, electrical and mechanical.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, makes adjustments, repairs and/or performs preventative maintenance on equipment, or machinery, etc.
  • Repairs, cleans, adjusts and/or performs preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, or machinery, etc.
  • Operates and maintains high and low-pressure steam, electric and other types of boilers.

 

 Typical Qualifications:

  • principles, theories, and practices of safety and risk management.
  • knowledge of welding and fabricating.
  • follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
  • maintain and/or repair tools and equipment.
  • speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally.
  • read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures.
  • recognize when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong (does not involve solving the problem).
  • work with or contribute to a work group or team to complete assigned task(s).
  • welding methods and techniques.
  • maintain composure and respond appropriately in stressful, emergencies, volatile, or crises.
  • equipment operation and maintenance.

 

 Supplemental Information:

  • Current UDC employees' hourly rate will be determined by the career ladder.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, working in a Correctional Environment.
  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
