Student Desktop Support position
Required qualifications
- Willingness and ability to support end users online, in person, and over the telephone
- Familiarity with Microsoft Windows operating systems (Windows 10 and 7)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office/Office365 suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to follow instructions and take direction from fulltime IT staff
- Desire and dedication to learn and apply new technical skills
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)
- Providing (remote and onsite) desktop/laptop computer support to SSW’s faculty & staff members
- Providing support for classroom equipment, including “all-in-one” podiums and hardware-based videoconferencing solutions (e.g. Zoom, WebEx, etc.)
- Installing and updating software
- Setting up new hardware such as desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers and other peripherals
- Conducting inventory of computers and peripherals (serial numbers, warranty and support contracts)
- Utilizing image deployment software (e.g. Clonezilla and Windows Deployment Services) to install preconfigured operating systems and software on multiple computers
- Systematically troubleshooting software and hardware issues in order to identify the root cause of a particular problem
- Escalating complex or serious issues to fulltime IT staff
- Other tasks to be determined based on experience and technical skill level
Although not required, basic familiarity with or previous experience in any of the following areas is highly desirable
- Mac OS X
- Mobile device support (iOS and/or Android)
- Customer service or support in a technical setting (e.g. computer help desk, school, business or organization)
- Software: Zoom, WebEx, VPN and Remote Desktop, antivirus/antimalware tools
- Tracking or “ticketing” systems to manage support requests
- Using advanced control panel and settings functionality
- Windows command line tools (cmd)
- Scripting, Windows registry editing, diagnostic tools
- Windows Active Directory environments
- Hardware: processors (CPUs), memory (RAM), hard disks, motherboards, etc.
- Networking: wired and wireless communication protocols, IP addressing, DNS, etc. Consumer (home) routers, switches, wireless access points
- Security: Protecting against attacks and malware, identifying and removing infections, implementing best practices for identity protection and online safety
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation or tutorials
Hourly Range: $14.13 - $15
Candidates are not expected to be fluent in all support tasks. The successful candidate will receive a detailed orientation and ongoing training opportunities.
