Systems Engineer

Overview:

MxV Rail’s Communications & Train Control (C&TC) team assists the railroad industry in designing, defining, modeling, testing,and evaluating C&TCtechnologies. We seek a talentedand highly motivated engineer to support current and next-generation train control technology and railway operations research. The successful candidate will support the research of Positive Train Control (PTC) systems, railroad wirelesscommunications, radio technology performance, railroad safetysystems, automation technology, lifecycle management, and/or other C&TC areas of activity.

 

Primary Duties:

The Systems Engineer is responsible for providing professional engineering and scientific services to internaland external customers as directed by the ResourceManager. This role involves using engineering principles, data analysis, systems engineering, database management/querying, programming languages for research and engineering communication systems, and train control systems. The successful candidate is expected to participate in all phases of projects by assisting in proposal preparation, requirements development, modeling, implementation, test planning, test execution, data analysis, presentations, and report writing. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the development of system concepts and formal system Concepts of Operations documents.
  • Participate in problem definition and technical needs analysis.
  • Support the development of systems engineering documentation, including formal system functional and performance requirements and interface specifications.
  • Work independently or within a multi-disciplinary group composed of MxV Rail staff, Railroad personnel, and vendor product development personnel.
  • Support the development of requirement verification methods.
  • Support the definition and execution of formal test cases and test programs.
  • Perform data collection, organization, and analysis using common, customized tools and techniques.
  • Perform requirements tracing tasks within requirements management tools.
  • Learn the use and application of industry-specific models and simulations.
  • Supports technology research and development activities.
  • Duties may also include project management assignments.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering-related field, computer science, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering concepts, particularly the system definition process (requirements analysis, system concept definition, and requirements definition) and test methodology (test case definition, test design).
  • Exposure to projects involving the development of practical solutions to unique, open-ended problems.
  • Ability to apply logical and methodical approaches to solving engineering problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, along with demonstrable public speaking skills. Capable of preparing and delivering technical presentations to scientific groups. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with internal engineering teams and customers are essential.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team from a hybrid work environment.
  • Demonstrable computer skills, with experience using Microsoft® Office products, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Familiarity with the development of formal systems engineeringdocumentation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the above, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Familiarity with, or basic understanding of, risk/threat/hazard analysis.
  • Experience with requirements management, including requirements management tools and requirements tracing activities.
  • Experience working with engineering projects related to PTC systems.
  • Proficient in testing methods, data collection, analysis techniques, and reporting.
  • Experience in testing againstsystem requirements, including familiarity with test case management and software tools and traceability of test cases to system requirements.
  • Experience with computer-based analysis, computer-aided design, and computer-based modeling.
  • Experience with reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis concepts.
  • Ability to aggregate and analyze large complex data sets from diverse sources and structures.
