The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description

The Industrial Hygienist (IH) is part of the Safety and Health (S&H) team within the Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH) Division. S&H provides oversight and technical support to Knolls Laboratory Site Operations.

Position Description 
•    As part of the ESH Team, this position will help integrate safety into laboratory operations and promote safe work practices based on regulatory requirements, best management practice guidance and Naval Reactors (NR) Program Policy.
•    Conducts and assists with inspections, compliance reviews and hazard assessments of laboratories, facilities, and construction. Prepares and provides peer-reviewed assessments, assists with and monitors corrective actions, as necessary.
•    Develop baseline and retroactive exposure assessments by completing monitoring and sample collection (direct reading instruments, sampling pumps, bulk sampling, passive vapor badges, etc.) and analyzing results.   
•    Manage and maintain IH equipment as well as assist in updating equipment inventory control, set-up, calibration, use, and analysis guides. 
•    Participates in the site emergency response organization as a subject matter expert in industrial health. 
•    Collaborate with other NR Program Safety and Health organizations on corporate initiatives.
 

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

•    Bachelor's Degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, chemistry, biology, engineering, or other related discipline.

Preferred Skills
•    Completion of prerequisite coursework to qualify as a certified industrial hygienist (CIH)
•    Experience with the selection and use of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple assignments with diverse stakeholders in different settings (e.g., laboratory, office, construction, demolition).
•    Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
•    Proficiency with database applications, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint and Teams.

Pay Range

$64,500 - $96,700 annually

Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
