Chesterfield County Government is seeking an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team Peer Recovery Specialist to serve as a crucial member of the ACT evidence-based model. The ACT team is a self-contained clinical team providing community based psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for persons with severe and persistent mental illness. Persons served by ACT are adult residents of Chesterfield County whose symptoms of mental illness and impairments which have not been relieved in effective or lasting ways by traditional treatments and interventions and may have a history of resisting or avoiding participation in mental health services, they also may be in and out of hospital or jail, and even homeless.
A Peer Recovery Specialist on this team would provide the following services in the community or a person’s home: peer support; serves as a consumer advocate; has the responsibility to carry out rehabilitation and support functions and assist in treatment; substance abuse services; vocational services; education, support, and consultation with families; and role modeling competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Other duties include - case management; social development activities; ensuring individual’s needs are met; potential coverage for evening, weekend and/or holiday shifts; participation in daily morning meeting; documentation on contacts and communication with team daily; expected to drive county car; use of personal phone for team communication.

Successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or GED; bachelor's degree or training as a peer advocate preferred; one year of experience in providing peer/recovery support services in a psychiatric setting working with adults with serious mental illness, or in related behavioral health work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must be a self-identified current or former recipient of mental health services for a severe and persistent mental illness. Requires knowledge of the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness including a knowledge of psychotropic medications. Requires skills in assessment and treatment of persons with serious mental illness; skills in establishing supportive trusting relationships with persons with mental illness and respect for their rights and personal preferences; excellent communication (verbal and written) skills; and problem-solving skills. Requires the abilities to work well with a diverse group of persons; work closely with a team; organize work and utilize time management; complete required tasks in a timely manner; use of an electronic medical record. The position will require the use of an automobile and home visits.
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
