Environmental Scientist - Invertebrate Project
Job Description and Duties -
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife welcomes applications for an Environmental Scientist to join a dynamic team in the Marine Region focused on managing California's marine invertebrate fisheries and resources. This individual will assist the Southern Invertebrate Management Project develop and implement management and monitoring plans, conduct research and data analysis, prepare environmental documents and regulations, and analyze legislation affecting invertebrate fisheries. Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), some of the duties will include:
- Collaborating with project staff on the management and analyses of a wide range of biological and environmental data relating to California’s recreational and commercial invertebrate fisheries.
- Assisting project staff in assessing the status of California’s commercially and recreationally important invertebrate resources, including CA spiny lobster, ridgeback prawn, and sea cucumber.
- Conducting research and monitoring for invertebrate fisheries using a variety of survey techniques including SCUBA-based surveys, at sea collaborative fisheries research, and dock side sampling.
- Assisting with outreach efforts to engage with the public on invertebrate fisheries related issues and information dissemination.
- Working with stakeholder groups to share information and develop innovative solutions and recommendations to improve management of invertebrate species and associated fisheries.
Working Conditions -
Ability to work in an office and collaborate with project staff dispersed around California. Must be able to work some weekends, and travel as needed. Ability to work in both an office and field (including on research and commercial fishing vessels) and use standard computer equipment. Must follow safety protocols when operating department equipment and vehicles.
