About Our Internships 

Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationship and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Our Summer 2023 Internship is June 10-August 16, 2024.  

Application Timeline:  

Now-October 15th: Invitation to complete Pre-Recorded Video Interview  

October 15th-filled: 2nd round interviews & offers made. 

• As interns at Blue Shield of California, interns:  
• Participate in impactful projects during their 10-week program  
• 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the health care industry, and more  
• Are invited to participate in BSC employee events such as Employee Resource Groups, Employee volunteer activities, and more.  

Your Role 

The Health Solutions team is a part of our larger Strategy & Health Solutions team which oversees provider partnerships & network management, health transformation acceleration, innovation, healthcare services, and strategy, planning, and operations functions and responsibilities at Blue Shield.  

Internships within the Health Solutions team may include:  

Community Health team leads the strategy, design, and development of community-based solutions. Community Health portfolio includes designing initiatives to address the social drivers of health, resiliency, and health equity efforts to improve the health and care of our members and communities. The community health intern will report to a senior manager within the business. In this role he/she/they will work cross-functionally to support a variety of community health initiatives aimed at improving disparities in healthcare outcomes.  

Population Health Equity team leads the strategy and development of health equity principles across the organization. Population Health Equity portfolio includes integrating population and health equity efforts such as getting and using meaningful data and designing initiatives to reduce inequities. The health equity intern will report to a Principal Program Manager on the Population Health Equity team. In this role he/she/they will work cross-functionally to support a variety of health equity initiatives aimed at improving data collection and disparities in healthcare outcomes.  

Your Work 

In this role, you will: 

• Support initiatives aimed at advancing and aligning the community health strategy and tactical workplan to reduce health disparities among communities 
• Work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders to address identified disparities and improve health quality and outcomes 
• Research evidence-based practices and nationally recognized criteria, designing, and recommending opportunities to enhance health equity efforts through scaling best practices, technology platforms or other culturally relevant modes of communication, and insights and perspectives generated by impacted and diverse stakeholders 
• Understand data trending across different segments of populations, with consideration for intersectional impacts.  
• Support cross functional project teams, including defining meeting agenda, leading meetings, capturing meeting notes and following-up on action items 
• Knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Trauma informed Care, and/or Resiliency in community health is a plus 

Your Knowledge and Experience 

• Actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health, business, health care or related field 
• Minimum 1 year of related professional experience, project, or coursework 
• Strong communication skills required, particularly writing for publication 
• Proactive, solution focused mindset with demonstrated creative, problem-solving skills  
• Knowledge of the key synergies necessary among practices, payers, community, populations, and policy leaders to better align health care transformation efforts 
• Passionate about changing healthcare and challenging the status quo to advance health equity
