About Our Internships
Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationship and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). As interns at Blue Shield of California, interns:
Participate in impactful projects during their 10-week program
10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the health care industry, and more
Are invited to participate in BSC employee events such as Employee Resource Groups, Employee volunteer activities, and more.
About the role:
The Global Business Services (GBS) organization at Blue Shield of California consists of highly specialized functional teams that oversee enterprise sourcing, procurement center of excellence and corporate insurance. GBS boldly invests in our people to create a meaningful employee experience, optimizes end-to-end processes that resolve customer irritants and support business growth, leverages technology and data to drive self-service and automation, and instills a customer-centric mindset through its end-to-end operating model.
As an intern, you will report to a GBS functional team manager, and play a key role within that respective team to collaborate, transform and deliver on GBS’s critical operational and strategic goals. Here is what you can expect to learn, and how you can contribute, during this internship in GBS:
Enterprise Sourcing
- Understand the anatomy of contracts and basic language of contractual agreements.
- What best practices are for conducting different types of competitive bids.
- How to negotiate pricing and terms for various products and services.
- Drive stakeholder progress and alignment throughout the contract redlining process.
- Allocate resources and manage team capacity relative to sourcing request demand.
- Compliance with various mandates and requirements imposed by internal Legal team and external Regulatory agencies.
Procurement Center of Excellence
- Gain understanding of the complex contracting and procurement processes that an enterprise Sourcing Team member must be proficient in.
- How to utilize various enterprise tools, systems and platforms, with focus on data integrity between critical enterprise systems.
- Value of documented processes and audit control points in yielding consistent outcomes that can reduce unpredictability and risk. How to simplify complex processes into user-friendly framework that set teams up to succeed.
- How to communicate and collaborate with cross-functional team members through various channels.
- Past Intern projects have included:
- Reconcile active suppliers across two systems (Oracle and Jaggaer).
- Enable standardization of contract template formats with macros in Excel.
- Enable more efficient updates to complex process documentation by mapping end-to-end workflows.
- Increase effectiveness and compliance of Sourcing Team by modernizing training content into video modules.
- Deepen the audit framework to validate process and system controls are working as expected.
Corporate Insurance:
- Broad exposure to Risk Management and Corporate Insurance, which add valuable dimensions to a career in Business Administration and Finance.
- How to apply best practices and processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency of critical business operations.
- How to identify and develop creative solutions for streamlining processes and automating tasks.
- Various methods for conducting research, data collection and data analysis.
- Past Intern projects have included:
- Support the risk management and corporate insurance team in day-to-day administrative tasks, activities, and projects.
- Assist Corporate Insurance Risk Manager in optimizing end-to-end processes by validating and improving Risk Management and Insurance tasks.
- Assist in other special projects and/or ad-hoc analysis related to risk management and insurance.
Qualifications:
Required: Currently pursuing undergraduate or graduate degree. Emphasis in finance, supply chain management and/or healthcare highly desirable?
Required: Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship, with ability to be productive while working remotely.
Required: High proficiency with IBM platform and Microsoft tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint), and ability to learn new systems and applications as needed. Experience with Visio is highly desirable.
Preferred: Robust skills in data analysis, problem-solving and process improvement. Ideally has project management experience working with cross-functional teams (paid roles, internships, volunteer experience, etc.).
