Analytical Lab Intern

About our group:

The materials science lab in Seagate Fremont Research Center leads in chemical analysis, thin film characterization, and mechanism understanding for magnetic media R&D. The lab works with product development and production to understand functional and performance issues at the materials level. The lab is equipped with state-of-the art instrumentation: TOF-SIMS, XPS, SEM/EDX, FIB/TEM, AFM, Raman, FTIR, GD-OES, LC/MS, GC/MS, ICP-MS, GPC, IC, and WCA.

 

About the role - you will:

Work with engineers to help improve the existing methodologies used to qualify raw materials and improve the detection of trace materials from small amounts of samples. You will help design experiments, collect data, interpret results, and determine next steps.

 

About you:

  • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Chemistry or a related field.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week during the 12 week internship.
  • Comfortable in a wet lab preparing solutions and making calibration standards
  • Self-motivated and independent with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented with a proven science background

 

Your experience includes:

  • Use of spreadsheets such as Excel and statistical software such as JMP and Minitab
  • Previous research projects operating analytical instrumentation such as GC/MS, LC/MS
  • General knowledge of analytical techniques
  • Python or other coding skills a plus but not necessary

The estimated base salary range for this position in the San Francisco Bay Area is: $28 -$43. Actual salary range is based on the regional labor market of the role in the geography in which the position is located based on the requirements of the job and your skills. This posted salary range is a good faith and reasonable estimate, and Seagate reserves the right to adjust this range depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
