Director of Communications and Beat Writer

This position with the Nighthawks will fulfill several roles during the 2024 summer (appx. June 1-early August, depending on playoff run) season. They will be expected to work every game during the regular season and a potential postseason run in order to keep fans informed about the team. The intern will be expected to produce a preview and recap of every game throughout the season, as well as several feature stories on players and coaches. In addition to beat writing work, this position requires communicating with the wider Upper Valley community. This includes establishing and maintaining sponsorships with local businesses, planning promotions, and managing relationships with local media outlets.

Applicants for this position are expected to have experience writing for a media outlet, whether on- or off-campus. Experience in covering a baseball and/or other sports team is not required, but it is preferred. However, knowledge of the sport of baseball is required. It is also preferred for applicants to have completed coursework in public relations. This position requires teamwork with various members of the Nighthawks. For example, planning promotions requires communication with the team owner.

The intern in this position is expected to attend every home game, showing up at least two hours before first pitch (6 pm on most days, 5 pm on Sundays). The intern will also be required to travel to road games, meeting the team in order to catch the bus to various locations. In terms of a per week basis, this internship will occupy approximately 60 hours per week in addition to travel on the team bus. This position may also require communication with sponsors prior to the beginning of the season, although this can be done remotely via email and phone.

While this position is an unpaid internship, benefits include discounted housing, a gym membership, and more. This internship is also eligible for school internship credit. Some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship for academic credit. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position. Check with your school's Internship Coordinator BEFORE accepting the hiring offer to determine if this position satisfies the criteria for receiving academic credit.
