Position Title:  Student Research Assistant

Average Hours/ Week:  7-14 hours per week

Start Date: As soon as possible

Duration: Seeking work study student who can work year round (Fall, Spring, Summer)

Overview

This Student Research Assistant position in the IU School of Medicine Department of Surgery will gain research/lab skills while providing support to research team.  

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Wet Lab Research Assistance
    • Animal colony maintenance, including but not limited to, breeder setup, ear clipping, weaning, and record keeping.
    • Perform genotyping and other biomolecular techniques as needed.
    • Assist with various laboratory maintenance and upkeep duties.
    • Attend lab meetings if applicable.
  • Clinical Research Assistance
    • Assists with developing various communications and information materials for study participants.
    • Ensures proper documentation of Case Report Forms, regulatory documents, PI notes, and any other mandatory study-related documents and ensures quality and accuracy.
    • Provides various additional research study support (such as protocol research in medical library and online databases, summarizing literature reviews for study hypothesis, grant preparation, manuscript review/editing, literature searches, and/or transcription).
    • May assist with recording study data, samples, and/or results in REDCap databases; maintains databases for subjects and subject scheduling; performs data validation checks and pursues resolutions to erroneous data; produces various reports in response to requests from PI, sub-investigators, and/or other study stakeholders.
    • May assist with identifying and recruiting potential research study subjects; calls/schedules subjects for appointments per protocol; determines eligibility according to the IRB/protocol approved methodologies, coordinates study procedures, and monitors the progress of research studies or projects.

Qualifications:

  • Work study award is required

Education/ Experience Required:

  • Current undergraduate student
  • Completion of one semester of Introductory Biology Lab Course (e.g. BIOL K101)

Availability:

  • Work schedule is 7-14 hours per week, between the hours of 9am-5pm, Monday - Friday (will adjust work schedule for exams as needed); once trained there may be more flexibility in schedule
  • This position requires onsite work; remote work will not be offered

Knowledge, Skills, Attributes:

  • Must be comfortable with animal research
  • No previous research experience required
  • Requires regular effective communication with faculty, staff, and trainees
  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have high commitment to quality and be highly thorough and dependable
  • All necessary training will be provided
