Cell Culture Lab Specialist

The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full-time contractor position; In Vitro Screening Lab Specialist with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Research Triangle Park, NC.

 

Salary: $23.37 per hour.

 

Travel: Overnight travel will not be required

 

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience working (6+ months) in a laboratory setting: up to 3 months of this requirement can be supplied from coursework, the remainder must be from an independent research experience;
  • Hands-on experience with biochemical and/or molecular biology techniques in cell cultures or with biological samples;
  • Experience following written protocols in a laboratory environment;
  • Proficiency performing basic chemistry calculations, quantitative analysis, and calibrating instruments;
  • Basic experience working with hazardous substances;
  • Demonstrated experience collecting and analyzing data, maintaining a detailed scientific laboratory notebook, and electronic record keeping;
  • Experience with laboratory health and safety procedures; and
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

 

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, environmental sciences, engineering, or closely related field from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.

 

EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.

 

What the EPA project is about

 

The Inhalation Toxicology Facilities Branch (ITFB) of the Public Health and Integrated Toxicology Division (PHITD), Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at EPA conducts non-clinical inhalation toxicology studies. A research team in ITFB is supporting the National Research Program Chemical Safety and Sustainability (CSS) Research Action Plan through its expertise in conducting air-liquid interface (ALI) cell exposures to support in vitro screening of inhalable test articles.

 

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent bachelor’s graduate to collaborate with EPA’s research team. Research experience includes:

 

  • Establishing and maintaining cell cultures in the laboratory;
  • Preparing 3D cell cultures for air-liquid interface exposures;
  • Performing data entry and analysis using office and laboratory software; and
  • Networking and exploring many career paths at EPA.
