The Advancement Internship is located within the Office of Advancement (OA) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). OA successfully raises over $30 million annually to fund the Museum’s mission to tell the American story through the lens of African American history and culture.  Current fundraising projects include support for vital initiatives across the Museum, sponsorship of public programs and exhibitions, and unrestricted funding for some of the Museum’s most critical needs. The department focuses fundraising efforts in the following main areas: Corporate, Individual, Foundation, and Planned Giving, as well as Membership. 

NMAAHC’s Office of Advancement is entering its final year of the Living History Campaign. This $350 million fundraising campaign will secure the Museum’s financial well-being for future generations, provide global leadership in education and scholarship on the African American experience, attract the best scholars and thinkers, expand our most successful initiatives, and build advanced digital platforms that will provide access to all. 

The Advancement Intern will assist with the research, cultivation, tracking, and stewardship of donors as part of the Corporate and Sports-Related Giving team. The intern will gain experience in fundraising for a large mission-based organization through hands-on participation in donor strategy meetings, learning and utilizing numerous tools for donor research, and supporting the planning and implementation of donor stewardship activities/events. The intern can anticipate gaining working knowledge of advancement functions on a highly successful fundraising team, including processes of donor cultivation, solicitation writing and donor stewardship; learning how to communicate with existing donors, prospects, and internal colleagues to effectively connect and communicate fundraising initiatives and museum messaging; and developing fundamental skills and knowledge of principles related to donor cultivation and stewardship events.

By the end of the internship, the intern will receive exposure to a broad area of museum operations and be introduced to the field of advancement, covering all facets from corporate giving, the role of fundraising campaigns, to the mechanics of special events.

Duties Include (but are not limited to):

  • Support research of donor prospects utilizing Museum techniques and tools for identifying likeminded organizations or donors active in related in areas of interest.
  • Support donor cultivation efforts by preparing meeting and presentation materials. 
  • Assist with donor stewardship efforts by supporting tour functions. 
  • Engage in the creative and writing process for donor proposals/applications.
  • Support the creation and dissemination of donor and meeting briefings for Museum staff: major gift officers and senior leadership.
  • Engage in donor event planning and execution processes.
