Housed at IUPUI, the Upward Bound program is designed to bridge the gap between high school and college. We provide students with tutoring, individualized resources, academic advising, college tours, cultural experiences, and more. 
 
Upward Bound is one of eight TRIO programs across the nation. As stated by the Department of Education, “The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs”

The key function of this role is to support the Upward Bound community, through proper handling and organization of confidential information, and continuous communication with Upward Bound families and prospective students through managing social media for the program and the First Gen Committee. The Program Assistant will work with Upward Bound staff in a dynamic environment to meet student needs. Each day can look different, but constants would include outreach to families and tracking student data.  
 
On Tuesday evenings and event days, Program Assistants will take attendance. Program Assistants will assist in tracking new student information, tracking interview information and properly organizing files. Program Assistant’s career goals and interests can influence other roles and responsibilities.  

Roles and Responsibilities

Affiliation  
  • Send and communicate upcoming events and reminders 
  • Maintain relationships with Upward Bound students and families 
  • Manage social media for UB and First Gen Committee 
Professional Development/ Other Responsibilities  
  • Attend workshops, staff meetings and other professional development opportunities to continue to grow professionally 
  • Provide basic website support with editing content and design.  
  • Serve as chaperone at Upward bound sponsored events 
 
Organization and Marketing 
  • Maintain accurate records as called for per event 
  • Planning, organizing and implementation of Upward Bound activities/events 
  • Provide administrative support in the preparation, data management, participant tracking and marketing of events 
  • Provide feedback for systems that are not working 
  • Manage social media 
 
Qualifications and Education Requirements 
  • Maintain a college GPA of 2.8 or higher 
  • Completed at least one year of college 
  • Currently enrolled at IUPUI and in good standing 
  • Reliable and able to manage time to work on multiple projects. 
  • Possess skills to work independently and on a team 
  • Possess excellent time management and organization skills 
  • Willingness to work within an office setting 
  • Excellent grammar/proofreading skills 
  • Must successfully pass a background check to work with minors 
  •  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs and Gmail calendaring. 
  •  Competence in customer service 
  •  Knowledge ofCanva and Zoom

Communication - Students will leave with the ability to evaluate information, listen actively, build relationships, and convey ideas effectively to various groups of people in both written and verbal form. 
 
Innovation The ability to research thoroughly and report best findings, create documents/resources, confront challenges productively, and make decisions independently.
