Location Details/Description: The Campbell Creek Science Center engages all learners in outdoor experiences that increase appreciation, connection, and stewardship of Alaska's public lands and natural resources.

The Campbell Creek Science Center supports statewide outreach for environmental education, interpretation, and youth engagement for the Bureau of Land Management Alaska. We provide environmental education programs and resources for children and adults, including distance learning, field trips and on location events, and professional development training in interpretation, engagement, place-based service learning, and natural resources guiding skills. CCSC works with BLM-AK offices and partners across the state.

The Center is located on the BLM Campbell Tract, a 730-acre parcel of public land with diverse habitats, wildlife, native vegetation and 12 miles of recreational trails in the heart of Anchorage. It is operated by the BLM Anchorage District Office with assistance from many volunteers and partners.

Position Overview: The project will be coordinated by the CCSC Manager. The concentration of the incumbent's efforts will focus on the marketing and outreach materials needed to encourage greater participation in the CCSC's various programming events. Some field work may be required, but most work will be conducted in an office environment. Field work may be in harsh weather conditions. The project expected outcomes includes the development of print and digital products to include brochures, social media posts and campaigns, and website announcements for each public program. Additionally, the incumbent will develop a marketing and outreach plan to encourage greater public and educational participation in various programming and events at the CCSC all in alignment with the CCSC strategic plan.

The Campbell Creek Science Center (CCSC) engages all learners in outdoor experiences that increase their appreciation, connection, and stewardship of natural and cultural resources and public lands. The CCSC is BLM Alaska's primary center for environmental education, interpretation, and youth engagement, interacting with an average of 50,000 annual visitors through programs, outreach, and interpretive resources onsite and across the state for the Bureau. The CCSC serves as a main implementor of the BLM Alaska's Education, Interpretation, and Youth Engagement (EIYE) step down strategy. This position involves teaching and leading child, youth, and adult groups outdoors in the Alaska environment. This may include teaching in areas of improved trails, rough terrain, wildlife, harsh weather conditions, and remote settings.

The position provides the ACE Member with significant experience in the fields of visual information skills, communication specialist, marketing and outreach development, visitor services, interpretation, and environmental education, as well an opportunity to work with a variety of natural and cultural resource professionals and communication specialists. The BLM will provide all necessary computers, training, office supplies, and any field supplies.

Duties:

  • Develop a marketing and outreach plan to encourage greater public and educational participation in various programming and events at the CCSC in alignment with the CCSC strategic plan.
  • Plans, promotes, and markets the visual aspects of publications, exhibits, or presentations to encourage greater public and educational participation in various programming at the CCSC.
  • Selects photos, illustrations, or other visual materials from among those provided with the assignment or found in the files.
  • Prepares layouts of pages, two-dimensional exhibit panels, or presentation materials such as posters, handouts, and brochures, etc.
  • Incumbent will create computer graphics and must be familiar with various computer graphic systems. Creates word text and final graphic design using "desktop publishing" software including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suites, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and the most recent version of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Prepares original and updated layouts conceived and or designed by others. Develops concepts for publications and presentation materials from rough diagrams and with often vague guidelines provided by the customer.
  • Actively supports the team concept and functions as a team player continuously. Contributes to department initiatives and continuously strives to improve the effectiveness of the CCSC through outreach and marketing of the public and educational programming.
  • Prepares "draft" layouts that convey an effective visual design of typography, graphics, and space to maximize visual impact and to emphasize visual elements for the requestor and the audience to encourage and improve participation in the CCSC's programming.
  • Works with BLM AK Anchorage District Office Government Printing Office Liaison to ensure adherence to policy guidance and branding specifications for digital and printed media.
  • Present in-person, off-site and field trip programming for elementary-aged students as needed.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, generally 9AM to 5PM, possibility for some weekends, early mornings, and/or evenings will likely be required in this placement.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~35 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The living allowance is a fixed rate determined by the Bureau of Land Management and ACE and is not flexible.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the Bureau of Land Management.

Housing Assistance: ACE Members will be eligible for reimbursable housing assistance up to $60 per week. The ACE Member will only be reimbursed for approved and demonstrated housing expenses.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include Social Media, Drupal, and on the job training for environmental education.

Qualifications

This opportunity is suitable for youth working towards, or recently graduated from, an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental education and interpretation; visitor services; resource recreation, and tourism;society and natural resources; and natural or cultural sciences disciplines; or related field.

ACE Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

BLM Required:

  • Successful completion of a federal background check
  • Fundamental knowledge or training in all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Fundamental knowledge or training in Adobe Creative Suites.
  • Fundamental knowledge in graphic design principles.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can have relevant experience in subject areas such as marketing/graphic design and outreach.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme cold, rocky terrain conditions, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the Bureau of Land Management or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the Bureau of Land Management. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the Bureau of Land Management, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to Bureau of Land Management and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
