Fellowship Award Amount: $1,000 - $1,250 (per quarter)

Chicago Review seeks two interns to work at the Review offices on the university campus for the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters of the 2023–24 academic year. This is an ideal position for students interested in applying to graduate school in English, creative writing or comparative literature, or in pursuing careers in publishing, journalism, media, or writing.
Our interns have gone onto work for leading publishers and publications, including Knopf, Triple Canopy, Litmus Press, Boston Review, and N+1. They have moved on from CR to write for major periodicals like The New Republic, and they have advanced into graduate study at top-ranked universities in the academic and creative humanities.
About Chicago Review: We have been publishing new writing in English and translation since 1946. Many well-known writers have been published in the Review, including Henry Miller, Phillip Roth, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, Anaïs Nin, Susan Sontag, Charles Simic, James Tate, Charles Bukowski, Alice Notley, Raymond Carver, Philip Levine, Michael Palmer, Robert Duncan, Edward Dorn, Anne Carson, Rae Armantrout, A.R. Ammons, Helen DeWitt, Hoa Nguyen, Dawn Lundy Martin, Don Mee Choi, Ed Roberson, J. H. Prynne, Keston Sutherland, Cody-Rose Clevidence, Garielle Lutz, and more besides. CR has recently published special issues on the Black Arts Movement in Chicago, underread modernists like Jaime de Angulo, Small Press Poetry in the United States, and Contemporary Korean Poetry.
Job description: Interns will receive hands-on experience in literary publishing by working on a journal at the forefront of new writing. Interns will be responsible for organizing literary submissions, managing the subscription database, and updating the website and social media accounts; and also for assistance with copyediting, fact & quote checking, typesetting, and proofreading pieces for publication, as well as various other office tasks. In the summer, interns also typically assist with the preparation of a special project, which may include a new special issue, or archival and cataloguing work. Chicago Review works with a small staff, and so interns typically have the opportunity to work on all aspects of our operation and production cycle. Attention to detail is a must for this position, along with clear and effective written communication.
Eligibility: We are looking for a reliable, responsible self-starter with good office management skills and an interest in contemporary literature. Candidates will need to be living in Hyde Park for the 2023–24 academic year and ready to regularly go to our office in the Taft House. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Wordpress, and/or Excel is a plus. There is often the opportunity to extend the internship through the summer.
