Position Title: Peer Advisor
Organization: IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI
Department/Office: Office of Student Affairs
Average Hours/Week: 10-15 hours per week
Must have federal work-study.
The Office of Student Affairs in the School of Liberal Arts serves students in academic advising, career development, records, recruitment and retention, and scholarships.
Summary:
Peer advisors are responsible for assisting the advising team in their efforts to educate Liberal Arts students about the academic and course advising resources and tools available, in order to help students gain knowledge about their degree requirements and create plans to assist them in accomplishing their academic and career goals.
Qualifications:
- Liberal Arts majors preferred
- Must be in good academic standing
- Working knowledge of university email, Canvas, One, iGPS, and class registration
- Efficient in communication (verbal and written)
- Skilled in inductive and deductive reasoning and time management
- Must be able to conduct self in a professional manner and embrace the diversity of all IUPUI community members and guests
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with student educational records
- Ability to receive continued training and constructive feedback
- Must have federal work-study
Duties and Responsibilities:
(AdRx) system
- Refer student to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor when appropriate
- Offer guidance on university policies, procedures, and deadlines
Administrative
- Manage advisor calendars, schedule appointments, and check students in for meetings
- Receive and respond to email messages and telephone calls
- Conduct front line operations as assigned by Liberal Arts Student Affairs staff
Assist with programs and special projects
- Assist in outreach to students regarding low Canvas engagement, SER feedback, and holds on their record
- Conduct weekly outreach by phone and email to student that have not yet enrolled for the upcoming term
- Represent Liberal Arts at various campus events, including summer orientation, weeks of welcome, fall career week, and other recruitment and retention events throughout the year
Additional Possible Duties (as assigned by Student Affairs Staff)
- Work one on one with students to search course courses, build schedules, and enroll in classes
- Advise students on schedule changes and the drop/add process
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of student meetings in the advising records
- Mentor students on academic probation or academic warning
