Anti-Trafficking Casework Intern

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst

humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. The IRC Oakland Anti-

Trafficking department serves foreign born survivors of human trafficking, employing client-centered trauma-informed practices rooted in the intersection of labor rights, immigrant rights, and social justice

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The TVAP (Trafficking Victim Assistance Program) and HOPE (Human

trafficking Outreach, Prevention, and Education) programs provides direct assistance to survivors of trafficking, builds awareness of human trafficking through public events, and trains organizations

serve survivors of labor and sex trafficking. The Anti-Trafficking Casework Intern will assist clients

with self-sufficiency milestones. Duties will include connecting clients with appropriate resources for personal needs including but not limited to housing, medical, legal, and safety. This position will also look to expand current networks and partnerships to better serve our clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate with staff to ensure appropriate services are being received.

• Assist in the process of connecting clients with resources and public benefits, such as secure

housing, medical needs, safety protocols, Medi-Cal, food stamps, and cash aid and other essential

services.

• Maintain client case notes, track service provision and other administrative duties

• Occasionally perform outreach activities and educate community members about human

trafficking.

· Accompany clients to appointments such as health check-ups, legal consults, school enrollments,

etc.

• Maintain a professional attitude and appearance as an IRC representative.

• Other duties as assigned.

Learning Objectives

· Interns will gain exposure to case management for Asylees and Vulnerable Noncitizens (human

trafficking and domestic violence survivors.) ·

· Interns will learn about immigration processes, such as: Asylum approvals, “U visa”, “T” visa”

applications; and resources available for survivors of trafficking and other crimes, and asylees.

· Interns will expand their experience providing trauma-informed, culturally specific case management

· Interns will gain familiarity in cross-cultural communication

REQUIREMENTS:

• Strong verbal and written skills in Spanish

• Enthusiastic about helping others, and the desire to meet high needs of clients.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills: the ability to work sensitively with clients, partners,

and colleagues in a cross cultural, multi-disciplinary environment.

• The ability to think creatively and problem-solve effectively.

• Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, effectively

manage time and meet deadlines; the ability to think creatively and problem-solve effectively.

• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel.

• Familiarity with programs like Microsoft Teams and Zoom and ability to report consistently

teammates.

• Ownership of a driver’s license, vehicle, auto insurance and clean driving record are a plus
