Commercial Graduate Program

Glencore is one of the world's largest globally diversified natural resource companies. Founded in the 1970s as a trading company, we have grown to become a major producer and marketer of commodities - employing 135,000 people around the world.

We are searching for exceptional graduate trainees to join our oil business as part of our 2023 Commercial Graduate Program. Our training program is structured to give you the opportunity to develop into a commercial role in the business, primarily within Risk, Analytics, or Operations. You will be trusted with individual responsibility from day one in a complex and demanding role, so you will have the ability to work well in a team and to think and act independently. We look for people who have a strong commercial acumen, demonstrate entrepreneurialism, thrive on logistical challenges and provide practical solutions to complex problems utilizing mathematical and coding capability. In return, you can look forward to an exceptional graduate salary package, a rewarding, challenging role and the chance to learn from some of the world's most successful physical traders.

Working at Glencore: Commercial Opportunities
Our presence at each stage of the commodity chain provides us with excellent market insight and access to opportunities. We are able to capture value at each stage, including extraction, processing, freight, logistics, technology, storage, marketing, risk management and financing. These critical areas of our business provide a wealth of commercial opportunities and career streams for our employees within the oil and gas business.

Our trainees work in the following areas:

Trading Operations
Our trading operators work alongside our physical traders and are responsible for the logistical and financial execution of each contract. This is a highly commercial role where attention to detail and precise communication are paramount. The operator has a material impact on every stage of the trade, from management of the shipping and transportation, legal and contractual considerations through to financial risk analysis and final settlement of the deal. A trading operator has a direct financial impact on the trading book and will work closely with the trading, chartering and financial teams in order to ensure that commercial value is maximized as well as mitigating operational risk.

Risk Management
Our risk managers work closely with front line traders and operators. Risk managers maintain physical and derivative exposure whilst assessing the accuracy and validity of mark-to-markets in order to produce profit and loss reports and risk metrics. They provide analysis ensuring that hedging is executed in line with our trading team’s strategy. Accuracy, confidence and exceptional analytical skills are key attributes in this area of our business. As a key member of the trading team, excellent communication and relationship management skills are required to maintain an independent view whilst also adding value by providing accurate data directly to the trading desk.

Oil Analysis
Our trading analysts work directly with our traders to evaluate fundamental global market supply and demand across the barrel utilizing mathematical and programming techniques. Our analysts work closely with traders, shipping and IT, developing tools in order to deliver value to the business.
Forecasting market trends and strategic global thinking are important skills. A good analyst will proactively form an independent view of the market and present clear and concise data to support this opinion. This data will be used to add value and inspire commercial strategy within the trading teams.

Take real ownership of your career. At Glencore you'll find it pays off.
