District #29 Fairfax Probation & Parole Intern
Fairfax Probation and Parole is seeking two student interns for the upcoming summer semester. These positions will introduce students to the diverse roles of a Virginia State Probation and Parole Officer. Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in the criminal justice field by participating in the following:
- Assist probation officers with daily tasks and investigations
- Enter data/reports into Virginia CORIS
- Case Management: You will develop individualized case plans for probationers/parolees, based on assessments and special conditions ordered by the Court, the Virginia Parole Board, and the DOC Directives and Operating Procedures.
- Office/field interviewing techniques
- Investigate alleged violations promptly and appropriately.
- Determine and impose appropriate and available sanctions up to and including arrest.
- Report findings to appropriate authorities as outlined in the DOC Directives and Operating Procedures. This includes recommendations and sentencing options.
- Conduct thorough investigations to include appropriate interviewing, record checks, and background verification.
- Introduction to Evidence Based Practices (EBP) and assessments
- Observe Court hearings, specialty dockets (Ex. Drug Court and Veteran's Court), and pre-sentence investigation interviews
- Assist specialty units (Ex. Sex Offender Unit, Gang Unit, Substance Abuse, and Mental Health Units)
- Assist with Intake duties and drug screening
- Field surveillance and probationer home contacts
- Treatment meetings with the Fairfax Community Services Board
The Fairfax Probation and Parole Office offers full and part time 8-week/12-week internship programs. Program hours may be adjusted on an individualized basis.
